MARYANNE D’AURIA: RIDING INSTRUCTOR AND COACH in Therapeutic Riding is responsible for teaching the riding lessons. She has an extensive knowledge of horses, horsemanship and knowledge of physical and intellect-tual disabilities. A positive learning experience and safety for the riders is essential..
A Team USA Special Olympics Coach, former director of the Red Barn Therapeutic Riding Program in Brookville, Long Island and now a Special Olympics New York Coach, Maryanne has been using therapeutic riding since the early 1990’s to benefit individuals with a wide range of special needs, challenges and disabilities.
Her program is designed to help each child or adult develop and enhance basic motor skills, muscle coordination and even communication skills, while gaining a sense of self-control, personal responsibility and self-confidence. Working with students with a variety of physical and emotional disabilities (autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, sensory impairments, developmental delays, brain injuries, seizures, stroke and PTSD ) she has demonstrated “how our equine partners can change and improve people’s lives.”
As a certified Special Olympics Coach in the 2003 World Special Olympics her student won both the Gold and Silver medals. Her students have earned Gold Medals in special Olympic competitions in New York State, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania.
“Therapeutic riding can turn a disability into an ability”, says Ms. D’Auria, a professional in converting the disabilities and challenges of a student into riding abilities and skills that extend far beyond the riding ring.
