WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS
WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS?
A perfect fit! The goals of our North Fork Therapeutic Riding programs (NoFoTRIP) and the Special Olympics New York (SONY) are both designed to help each individual with a disability develop and enhance their skills to full potential, while gaining a sense of self-control, personal responsibility and self-confidence.
However, the Special Olympics New York takes a giant step forward for those with disabilities! Therapeutic riding has become a “sport”.
The “rider” in no longer in therapy, but now is a Special Olympics “athlete” engaged in a competitive sport. The Special Olympics “coach” embraces the philosophy that quality training and opportunities for “competition” should be provided for the athlete! Now there are training sessions for a training group consisting of the mounted Athlete, a Coach, a Leader (volunteer) and Sidewalkers (volunteers) with specific duties.
Overall development of the athlete and the athlete’s acquisition of skills and knowledge of a particular sport as well as having fun are the objectives.
The North Fork Therapeutic Riding Program (NoFoTRIP) is honored to be chosen as an official Equestrian Training Center for SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW YORK. Our trainer Maryanne D’Auria, was recently certified as a Special Olympics New York Equestrian Coach. Training of serious riders will begin in the spring and a horse show will take place in June. We look forward to having our athletes train and compete.
