WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC RIDING ?

THERAPEUTIC RIDING PROGRAM

Q:   What is therapeutic riding?  Children and adults regardless of age or their disability: whether physical, developmental, cognitive or emotional can benefit from Therapeutic Riding on our “Special horses for special students”.

Working as a team, our special, calm horses and experienced therapeutic riding instructors provide an opportunity to improve lives! This is a year-round program designed to help each individual develop and enhance their skills to full potential, all the while gaining a sense of self-control, personal responsibility and self-confidence.

Learning to ride is in itself a cognitive achievement and becoming able to control an animal as large as a horse demands a lot of physical skills that can be learned! Therapeutic Riding often, sometimes dramatically, helps develop and improve basic motor functions, balance, posture, endurance, muscle coordination and even communication skills.

Further, the clients of therapists and psychotherapists find that when it is included in a treatment program, the human-horse bond and interaction can be a powerful incentive to addressing behavioral and mental health problems such as low self-esteem, low self-control and self-confidence.

Children and adults who cannot play sports or engage in other rigorous activities, can through therapeutic riding, master riding a horse, gaining physical, developmental, emotional and behavioral skills.

“Therapeutic riding can turn a disability into an ability that extends far beyond the riding ring” says Maryanne D”Auria, an accredited Special Olympics New York coach and former director of the Red Barn Therapeutic Riding Program in Brookville, Long Island.
